Michael Arrington Speaks The Truth March 13th, 2009
Given how critical I have been in the past on TechCrunch, I have to say that today, I become a proud reader again. Arrington, lead editor, has just released a post entitled “The Rules Apply To Everyone,” in which he details the TC method for avoiding conflicts of interest. I have never felt that TechCrunch was unethical, just that they had lost their editorial vision and become dull. He also states that he will soon be divesting from all his private investments. A bold move, to be sure.
We need to talk about this. Bloggers our not journalist. Any blogger that is honest (Arrington, misguided as he can be, being human ), should in no way be barred from being a normal person. To begin with, we all blog. At what point are we barred from investing in a corporation? When does it become unethical to invest? Here is a little hint, never. If you are upfront, have fun. Go for it.
Now, I can see why Arrington is doing this, he comes under more criticism (only some which is fair) than a presidential candidate. Anyone with that power will become a hated figure. This is a simple way for him to dispel all possible conflicts, and to keep the critics at bay. Shame on us for driving him to this point. Do you not think, that if TechCrunch had been up to no good (even just once) it would not have leaked?
Of course it would have, any vindictive wanna-be-CEO would jump on it and trumpet it on high. Get real people, TC is not taking money for stories, nor do they promote anything unfairly that they should not. Get over it, and yourself. Just because you are not as powerful as Mike does not mean you can constantly make unfair and untrue allegations. If you have a legitimate complaint, make it, and then move on.
