Piracy Again Not Killing Artists – Just The Bad Ones

June 2nd, 2009

In the you knew it, but here is proof category, let’s talk about album sales. We all know how the industry bemoans their dying sales, but it is so hard to hear the complaints when an artist comes along and smashes his way into the #1 spot. Eminem just did that, selling 608,000 copies of his new release “Relapse” in just one week. Piracy sites were also busy sharing these newly purchased files about the internet. So what gives?

Plain and simple, the people who were going to buy it did, and the people who just wanted to listen to it torrented it. Simple as pie. It works like this: for Metallica this last year I was excited to drop 150 for a pair of tickets to their show, and 15 more for the cd. Give me the name of a random hip hop artist: chances are that I do not want to risk the purchase. It might be that auto tune b.s. Just keep this in mind, artists that consistently make music that people want to hear, will sell CD’s and pack arenas.

People are willing to support the best, but when the worst are forced on us over and over and over, we grow weary of the noise.
