Stupidity In Real Time – China Blocks Twitter June 2nd, 2009
If you have ever made a pretty damn big mistake, what would you do? Have a reasonable discussion over it, apologize and move on? Or perhaps try and crack down on dissent (ironic in this case) and keep protests to a minimum? China is choosing plan B. With the looming anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre, in order to keep people from remembering it, they are blocking Twitter and Hotmail, in an attempt to make people keep anger to themselves.
Apparently there is only one microblogging and one email service in China.
Of course, this strategy does not work. People are not going to forget something because you block Twitter, in fact removing their ability to morn will only exacerbate their anger. All in all China, really, drop the censorship. Realize that it will not work, ever. Squeeze a balloon and it expands somewhere else.
