Digg Ads – Now You Can Vote

June 3rd, 2009

If you have something important to do, skip this post. I have been a fan of Digg.com since the dark ages, I recall in fact the debate across the site back when they first added the ability to submit sports news. Terrifying. Anyway, I have been there with Digg for a long damn time, and today they have finally done something that they should have done a long time ago. But, not in the right way.

Ads will now show up in the Digg story stream, and based upon how it is Dugg, the story will either be “priced out of the system” for ads that get buried [all of the ads are going to be buried by the arsehole internet, myself included], and the best are to have their price lowered. Wait, so the good ads pay less and the worst ads escape? Hell no Digg! Here’s what to do: force all advertisers to pay a chunk upfront, and then discount from there! Lots of Diggs lowers the cost per Digg, bu charge ‘em for each click.

Hey Digg, you still lose money. Go to war a bit here: figure out a way to actually become profitable. I appreciate the “love the user” aspect of this, but really, the cute Web 2.0 days are over – get profitable.
