8% Of Internet Pirating Video – More Prisons Needed June 19th, 2009

Reuters is reporting today that among the French, German, British, and American populations, 8% are pirating online video. Not 8% of 18-28 year old males with laptops, but 8% of all consumers. All the pirates in the house give each other high fives.
Moving on, this means that the recent legal kerfuffles over piracy are heading towards being moot. I really cannot see the number of people pirating declining, especially given the current rosy economy. So, if 8% of the populations is guilty of a crime, what do you do? I would suspect that the governments will attempt to do something similar to what they do with some plants marijuana, keep it illegal and abuse their populations.
Perhaps we need to step back and contemplate the numbers: 8% of the US (for a smaller sample size) population is 24,000,000 people. Can they all be sued? Can they all be put behind bars? Of course not. Prohibition failed, as will locked down data for consumers. Not passing judgement on whether pirating is ethical, but my god it does seem inevitable.
