Google Thinks That I Am Jesus, Knows What I Am Up To December 29th, 2009
When you Google yourself, how well does Google do? In my case, pretty damned well. There are two other Alex Wilhelm’s that have strong Google results, a model and a record executive. I am still ahead.
Anyway, Google now has the “related searches” bit at the bottom of a search for Alex Wilhelm, which stroked my ego nicely. Also, Google did a damn fine job of picking related words, take a look:
But then again, it has some image problems. It seems to think that I am jesus. Take a peek at this:
Still some work to do. Go Google!

How Big Is Your Audience? December 29th, 2009
Really, how much pull do you have? No, I am not wondering how many Twitter followers you have. That is as easy to game as an online politics poll.
No, how big is your audience? When you write something, or do something, how many people does it impact? Your actions alone, not someone that you manage. What impact do you have, every day?
Are you creating a ripple, a splash, a nothing, or perhaps a typhoon? Think about it. Who are you touching? When you go to sleep tomorrow night, or tonight depending on your time zone, how many lives will you have changed?
Set a goal, pick a number of people that you want to influence tomorrow. Then stick to it. Then add one for the next day, and keep hat up. Eventually, it will be a large number.
Life is interactions, all combined into a wonderful web of people. How big is your audience? How big is your life?

The Best Thing That I Have Read In Some Time December 28th, 2009
To begin, from Wikipedia: “Heavy Metal band Black Label Society was named after Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky, due to Zakk Wylde’s fondness of the drink.”
There, now you have read it as well. Now:

Night Thoughts December 22nd, 2009
I was about to call it a day and catch some crash before the arrival of tomorrow’s news, and the trumpet call to get back to blogging, but then I began to think about Denton. He founded a goddamn empire. And I thought about Calacanis, with his Weblogs. Money and words, two of my favorites.
Both Gawker and Weblogs are fun stories, but I really do think that all the hype and press around them forget an important input: words. Can you imagine the total words that were required to build up those millions in valuations? Terrifying, even to consider.
So, tomorrow, I am going to get up and write a few thousand words, mostly about breaking news, with some bullshit and opinion mixed in. And I will advance the TNW standard, I do love the team that I am fighting for. But it is a fucking long march to build a media empire.
So the next time that you read about some rags- to-billions media empire, think about how much content work went in. Then tell me it was fucking easy.
Points to Jason and Nick.

Paul Carr Turns Out Brilliant – A Review of “Bringing Nothing To The Party” December 21st, 2009
Paul Carr just released his book for free on the internet, and my somewhat bemused self decided to download a copy and burn through it this fine Sunday. You indeed are reading this on a Monday, given that I decided to drop sledging this review to go gamble my small brains out at a poker table. But I digress.
This review is a bit self-reflective, but I shall try and keep my ego from intruding overmuch. It is, after all, about Paul’s book.
Paul Carr is a bit like a better, older, and somehow wiser version of your humble reviewer. Especially if you think about him before he recently stopped drinking. That cease-fire on his liver made little sense to me before I read his book. Allow me space to explain.
Drinking and technology have long been bunkmates for a wide number of reasons. Some personal favorites of mine include the philosophy that we internet people seem keen on being full of shit (it cannot just be me), and that drinking helps us do that, but with more confidence and hiccoughs. Also, many people have pointed out to me that we internet folk tend to move a touch faster than other people (perhaps), and that alcohol slows us down a notch (a still larger perhaps).
